What is it to think as an artist in the age of AI?
All artists must make a choice as to whether to use AI or not. This decision is multi-layered, and personal to each artist. Some artists prefer "traditional" art, such as leaving thick brushstrokes on a canvas to add texture to their pieces. Other artists embrace these new technologies, as they see it as a tool which allows them to expand their art. If collaborating with AI for the creation of art, it is crucial is to keep human creativity central to the piece. Artists must maintain their autonomy, and use AI as a tool to help them expand their creativity, not replace it. Artists choosing to engage with new technologies must embrace its potentials while being aware of the challenges that come with them. It it vital for artists to remain diligent when using AI, and be transparent about its use. This being said, I also believe that artists should approach partnerships with technology with an open mind, as it allows us to expand our creativity by giving us access to new tools and to communities of other artists. Using AI as a partner in the creation of art can offer us diverse inspiration and prompts which allow us to reflect, while we (as the artist) have lived experiences, traumas, judgement and most importantly, creativity. It allows us to expand and diversify our ideas, and to transform ourselves endlessly.
Over the course of this class, I have learned how to have a good relation with technology as an artist. I have learned how to use it as a partner, and as a tool which allowed me to expand my artistic practice. However, the most important thing that I have learned in this course is that using AI does not make any piece of art less genuine.
